We at GMS are excited to have Bob Joyce and Drake Maynard return to our 2016 Summit to present two new sessions on Human Resource Law and Practice. We hope you have made plans to join us.
Current Trends in HR Law and Practice
This session explains recent developments in employment law—including the use of criminal background checks, pregnancy discrimination, changes in requirements for overtime pay, and the employer mandate under the Affordable Care Act, etc.
Understanding the Basics of HR Law and Practice
This session explores the fundamental principles of employment law—starting with employment-at-will and its exceptions and touching on employment discrimination, wage and hour regulations, and family and medical leave rights and requirements.

BOB JOYCE, PROFESSOR OF PUBLIC LAW AND GOVERNMENT UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL Mr. Joyce has a bachelor’s degree from UNC and his law degree is from Harvard. He has practiced law in New York City and North Carolina, with focus on employment law, representing both individual employees and employers. He is the author of The Law of Employment in North Carolina’s Public Schools and many articles related to the law of employment. |
DRAKE MAYNARD, FACULTY, SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL Mr. Maynard retired from his position as Director of Employee Relations for the State of North Carolina in 2011. Prior to that, he had been the Senior Director of Human Resources Administration for UNC-Chapel Hill and Personnel Director for UNC Hospitals. Drake is on the faculty of the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Public Health’s nationally ranked Executive Management program. He has an undergraduate degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and a law degree from the University of South Carolina. Through Drake Maynard HR Services he provides human resources consultation and staff development services for state and local governments. |

e-File 1094/1095
In early April, we will be releasing Supplement #425 e-File 1094/1095. We are awaiting IRS final approval on the upload test file. They have notified us there is currently a five-day backlog for this so as soon as they verify our file is compatible with their system, we will release a soft-ware revision. In the meantime, please review the reporting instructions by going to https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i109495c/. Once the revision is released, you may order it by going to www.gmsactg.com. When installed and security rights given, this supplement will enable the Create e-file buttons at the bottom of the Print 1094/95 Form/e-File tab within Payroll, Annual, 1094/1095.
